Additional Computer Requirements for online World languages courses (Mandarin, Chinese, Japanese):

Adobe Flash Player version 6 or newer (latest version available here)
A microphone will be needed so that oral communication assignments can be handed in.

You will also need to have sound recording software. Almost all computers come with sound recording software, but it is limited to creating short WAV files. Any of a number of free programs can be downloaded that will create MP3 files of any length. You can also use free software that most computers already have that will convert WAV files to MP3.

On windows machines, go to Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>Sound Recorder to see if you have a sound recorder already on your computer. If you do, that sound recorder will create sound files for you but they will be .wav files and will be large files. If you can use a program to save the files as an .mp3 file, it will create a smaller file, thus taking less time to upload for your teacher.

  • Japanese language pack for the computer's operating system if the pack is not already installed (details here).

  • Chinese language pack for the computer's operating system if the pack is not already installed (details here).
